Bala Mandir’s Kinship Care (KC) programme was started in 2022 to help and support children who had lost one or both parents to Covid 19. Today we support over 2100 children in 22 districts of TN. In the next 2 years, we plan to take KC to the remaining TN districts and support 3000 children, in all.

At the end of the third year, an impact study was done comparing the families who have recently joined the programme and those who have been in the programme for the past 2 to 3 years using standardised research tools. The results show a significant improvement in child outcome as well as a stronger maternal well being/empowerment. YES. Over time the proportion of children being supported from non-covid families is increasing and now more than 40% of children are from non-covid families.

We will continue our support till the children are able to stand on their own. The duration is not defined exactly. We’re evolving processes for supporting the children even after they finish school

It is an important part of our overall support, but the KC program is all about holistic support to the beneficiary children. We provide virtual Educational Support Services, through a network of volunteers. This includes English, Math, Tamil, test prep, personality development and more (click here for a detailed list). Our social workers are seen as extended members of the families of the children.

Our custom-built software (Dhruva K), hosted on the cloud, helps us keep track of each child’s progress. Our Social Workers can access and track, in real time, the data to continuously monitor each child’s progress.

• A team of one field social worker (FSW) and one remote social worker (RSW) for each district.
• FSW visits each family for assessment and support, while RSW interacts over phone with each family.

At present the average cost of supporting a child is Rs 20,000 per annum.
